About Clinics without Borders

A Brief History

Clinics Without Borders began as a heart felt passion of Dr Ted Berghausen to use his knowledge and influence to help the under-resourced and under-served people of Mexico and other developing countries. In 2005, a door was opened with a local doctor in Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico. Dr Delia Meza, a long time friend of Dave and Patti Piper, shared her vision for a clinic in the barrio with Ted and his wife Consie Berghausen. Immediately, Ted felt a heart connection with the Mezas and the CWB concept was born. In 2006, the organization was formed, the mission statement crafted, and government approval was granted for 501c3 status. In 2006, the first Clinic was constructed on a lot donated by the Mexican government and Dr. Meza officially opened its doors in November 2006. How we operate

Clinics Without Borders will partner with local organizations or mission agencies in order to accomplish our goal of local physicians caring for local families. Our first partnership is with Pastor Julio and Dr. Delia Meza of Puerto Penasco, Mexico. They have formed a Mexican equivalent of a NFP called a “la Asociacion Civil” Their board consists of prominent community and church leaders. Their legal documents are on file in the US at the CWB office and in Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico public offices. We have clearly defined expectations with our first partners and will do the same with future partners. Clinics Without Borders constructed the clinic facility with the aid of volunteer organizations, helped train local physicians in family care, and facilitates utilization of the clinic for the neighborhood, and provides funds for medicines and treatment. CWB also provides accounting oversight to assure proper use of funds and proper documentation. The local organizations provide the staffing for the clinic, care for the patients, maintenance of the facility, and accountability of funds utilized in patient care. Our second partnership with Unite 4 Africa will be organized similarly.
